Quick start

Open Kaketa and tap Start on the Practice tab. It gives you ten new words from Grade 1.
Read the prompt, write the word in the squares with Apple Pencil or a finger, then tap Show Answer.
Compare with the answer and its stroke order, then tap Got It or Not Yet. If you already knew the word, tap “I have already mastered this word” and it won’t come up again.

In Words, open a group and a section, tap Select, pick the words, and tap Mark Mastered. Select All marks the whole section.
To mark a whole group, such as all of Grade 1, open the group and use the ⋯ menu: Mark All as Mastered.
Swipe a word to the right to mark it mastered, or back to learning. A word’s page has a Status button too.

In Settings → Handwriting Check, make sure “Check handwriting” is turned on. A Check button then appears while practicing, and OpenAI says whether what you wrote matches: correct, close, or not quite.
It’s free, up to 300 checks a day per device, through Kaketa’s server, which keeps nothing. OpenAI may keep what it receives for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse. Tap Test the Connection to make sure it works.
If the check says it isn’t available, OpenAI’s Decisions API (which is in beta) is unreachable for the moment; grade yourself and try later.

Progress and My Words sync through iCloud between devices signed in to the same Apple Account. There is nothing to sign up for; make sure iCloud Drive is on in iOS Settings.
Sync can take a minute after you make a change.

Requires iOS or iPadOS 26 or later.
The grade groups follow the kanji taught in each year of Japanese elementary school; the words for each are common words, not an official school list. JLPT levels are community lists, since the test publishes none.
Meanings in Japanese and Tagalog are machine translated; English is from the dictionaries directly.
